POKOTABI / Yatsude-Ya
八ツ手屋 天丼
Yatsude-Ya in Kanda-Tsukasacho is a longstanding tempura specialist renowned for the aroma of toasted sesame oil and rich, sweet-savory tare sauce, serving satisfying weekday lunch bowls from Tendon Chu and Jo to loaded Tenjubako boxes.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Even before stepping through the door, the rich aroma of toasted sesame oil greets you, instantly whetting the appetite. Set in a corner of Kanda-Tsukasacho, Yatsude-Ya is a dedicated tempura shop with an air of nostalgic charm, turning out hearty, old-school Edo-style tendon. Freshly fried tempura with a substantial, crisp coating is generously dipped in a deep, sweet-savory brown sauce, melting into steaming hot rice for a deeply satisfying bowl.
The menu is straightforward, anchored by the accessible Tendon Chu, the upgraded Tendon Jo, and the lavish Tenjubako. Tendon Chu features 2 small prawns alongside a kakiage fritter of squid tentacles and onion, whose savory crunch balances seamlessly with the rich tare sauce for an everyday lunch. For a more bountiful spread, Tendon Jo includes 2 prawns accompanied by a squid kakiage and green beans. Stepping up to the Tenjubako adds 3 prawns along with vegetable tempura such as eggplant and pumpkin, filling the lacquered box with fragrant crispness.
Served alongside each bowl, a delicate clear soup and refreshing pickles provide a crisp foil to the robust, savory tempura sauce. Service focuses primarily on weekday lunch hours, and payment is cash-only up front when ordering, so having cash ready makes things seamless. Amid the lively atmosphere cherished by local office workers and neighborhood regulars, it delivers the simple pleasure of an unpretentious, traditional tendon lunch.
